Locals were surprised when a sea serpent washed up on the main beach of Cabo San Lucas on the Baja California peninsula in Mexico. The fish was about twenty feet long, silver colored with spots and had a bright orange dorsal fin. The ‘sea serpent’ was actually an Oarfish which are deep water fish, rarely seen, unless they are dying. One species of Oarfish can reach a length of over fifty feet. The occasional beachings of oarfish after storms, and their habit of lingering at the surface when sick or dying, make oarfish a probable source of many sea serpent tales.

In 1996 , a Giant Oarfish found on the shore of the Pacific Ocean in the USA is being held by US servicemen. The original photo can be seen on page 20 of the April 1997 issue of All Hands, a US Navy-owned publication.
